The Bible’s Definition Of The Terms “Ages” And “Dispensationalism” And What Salvation Looks Like In There Differences

I am doing a series of messages that will contain around ten end time word definitions so that you, when you are reading your bible and come across some of the words, you will know what the word is and even the differences in words as they relate to timeframe. 

An example of the next three messages following this one will be to define the differences between two words or period of times for the same word like 1st and 2nd resurrection, or 1st and 2nd death, or 1st and 2nd coming. 

This message will be to explain and define periods of time in the bible and why it matters in relationship to salvation and to the words “resurrection”, ‘death” and “coming.” For example right now we are in the church age or dispensation. Salvation works differently for us as it did for the Old Testament Jews. Now, now it still has to come through Jesus but in what manner God set up the two periods of time differs one from another. 

Ok so first let’s distinguish the differences between an “age” and a “dispensation” so that as we move through, we maintain our biblical bearings.

The difference between ages and dispensations in the bible are as follows:

An age refers to a measure of time, while a dispensation refers to a system of administration or stewardship during that time. 

Key Differences

·        Ages are chronological. They mark distinct periods or eras on a historical timeline.

·        Dispensations are administrative. They define how God relates to humanity and what responsibilities He gives them in that particular dispensation. For example in the OT they sacrificed animals yearly so that the sins that they committed throughout the year would be “covered” by the invoking of the dispensational rules that God set up. But in the NT example Jesus was the final sacrifice:

o   Hebrews 7:27: He does not need to offer daily sacrifices like other high priests, "for this he did once for all when he offered up himself".

o   Hebrews 9:28: "So Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time..."

o   Hebrews 10:10: "And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all".

Blessed be the God and Father of your Lord Jesus Christ who has blessed you with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as he chose you and him before the foundation of the world, that you should be holy and without blame before him in love, having predestined you to adoption as a son or daughter by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, which he purposed in himself, to the praise of the glory of his grace, by which he made you accepted in a beloved. In him ye have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace which he made to abound towards you in all wisdom and prudence, having made known to you the mystery of his will, that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times you might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on earth in him. I ask that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation, and the knowledge of the mystery of him, to the deepest knowledge of him that you are willing and able to receive, that the eyes of your understanding would be open wider, and that you would be enlightened to who he is, that you may know what is the hope of his calling, what are the riches of the glory of his inheritance in you, and what is the exceeding greatness of his power towards you, who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, which he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in heavenly places, that he would grant that you would be strengthened with might through his spirit in the inner man, and into your spirit and heart, consistently walking in the spirit so that you would be able to stand against the appetites of your flesh, the corrupted spirit of this world, the devil and his demons, and any and all fleshly desires and temptations. I pray that your love may abound more and more in all discernment, that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be real about your Christianity, and unoffendable until the day of Christ, being filled with the fruits of righteousness, love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, which are by Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit to the glory and praise of God. I ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will, wisdom, and spiritual understanding, that you may want worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing him, being fruitful in every good work, strengthened with all might according to his glorious power, giving thanks to the Father who has qualified you to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints who walked by the Spirit and in the life. I pray that your hearts may be encouraged, being met together in love and unity, that you would attain to all the riches of the full assurance of understanding, both of the Father and of Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. I thank my God always concerning you for the grace of God which has been given to each of my listeners by Christ Jesus, that you are enriched in everything by him, in all utterance and all knowledge, so that you do not come short in obtaining or operating in your calling and purpose, nor in using any spiritual gifts or talents to perform mighty miracle signs and wonders, and that we would do the greater works of Jesus yet to be accomplished, that we would be found eagerly waiting for the continued revelation of our Lord Jesus, who will confirm you to the end, that you may be blameless in the near coming of the day of our Lord. God is faithful by whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son Jesus. Okay, so now therefore, my sisters and brothers in Christ, when things get tough, think about whatever things are true, noble, just, pure, lovely, and whatever things are of a good report. If there is any virtue, and if there is anything praiseworthy, meditate on these things alone. I pray that in his very end of the end time days that you would let your love be without hypocrisy. Show people your faith by your works and service and love. Hate and loathe what is evil, cling to what is good and righteous, be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love and honor, giving preference to one another, not lagging in diligence, fervent and fully engulfed in spiritual fire, serving the Lord, rejoicing in hope, walking in the peace of God, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer, distributing to the needs of the saints, that is each other, and that you would be given the hospitality. May the God of patience and comfort grant you to be like minded towards one another, according to Christ Jesus, that we learn to be of one mind and one accord, striving to get along no matter what disagreements we may encounter, operating completely and fully in love, always striving for the working out of God's specific will for each of our lives, while working in partnership with each other, within the church and the Holy Spirit, as he manifests as miracle signs and wonders through the daily activities of our ministry and kingdom work, and while we also go out preaching the gospel and the word and deed. Let us love and serve one another, our enemy, and those who wouldn't expect us to do so, considering each person better than ourselves. Find up any words or thoughts that are contrary to the love of God, or which would set you back in your Christian walk. Guard your heart from anything that would hinder the growth of your character. Never forget that you can do all things in Christ, and never forget this means all things. Step out of faith today and walk with God and with each other, being assured that nothing will separate you from Him as long as you abide in Him. Call those things that don't exist as though they do. Remember the faith of God of which we have created the universe by the Rama and Logos Word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of the things that are visible. All that you need for this life is invisible until you apply your faith to receive it, but make sure you make your requests known to God without fear, doubting, and unbelief. Always remember the he that is in you is greater than he that is in the world. Be more than a conqueror today, submitting to the will of God in everything. Never forget that you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you this very day. Let each of us express uncompromising love towards one another in humility while maintaining a teachable spirit, seeking to grow no matter how much it challenges our current thinking. I pray that God will give you the revelation within this message that he intends you to receive with the understanding. Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, to God our Savior, who alone is wise, be glory in majesty, dominion and power, both now and forever. But in a New Testament example, Jesus was a final sacrifice, and he literally removed our sins. Notice a difference, one is covered, one is removed. Hebrews seven twenty seven. He does not need to offer daily sacrifices like other high priests, for this he did once for all when he offered up himself. Hebrews nine twenty eight. So Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time. Hebrews ten, and by that we will have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. Ages can contain dispensations. One long era of time can host multiple different regulatory shifts. Dispensations focus on rules. They highlight specific commands, testing human failure and divine judgment. A practical analogy. Think of human history like a school system. The ages are the school buildings. Elementary school, middle school, and high school represent major, distinct phases of time in a student's life. The dispensations are the classroom rules. A first grade classroom has different rules, responsibilities, and testing standards than a twelfth grade classroom, even though both exist within the same educational framework. I know it's not a Bible analogy, but sometimes Jesus did the same thing, right? So what are the ages or dispensations? That is at different time frames as listed in the Bible. The Bible outlines different ages and dispensations through innocence, conscience, and law, representing distinct periods when God testing human responsibility. The seven major dispensations. Theologians who study dispensationalism generally divide human history into seven sequential periods Innocence, creation to the fall, covered Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden before they ate the forbidden fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Conscience, the fall to the flood, lasted from the eviction of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden until the flood in Noah's day, where humans were tested by their inner moral awareness. Human government, the flood to Abraham, began after the flood when God gave humanity civil authority and capital punishment, ending with the rebellion at the Tower of Babel. Promise, Abraham to Moses, spanned from God's covenant to call Abraham until the giving of the law at Mount Sinai. Law Sinai to Christ, defined by the Mosaic Law, where Israel was tested under specific commandments until the death and resurrection of Jesus, grace or the church age, Pentecostal to the rapture, the current period where salvation is offered freely through faith in Jesus Christ to all people. Now if you are a seven thousand year earth person, which simply means that there is a total of seven thousand years from Genesis to the end of Revelation, some break up the dispensations in a two thousand year periods, of which we are in a third of the first two two thousand year periods. We are very near to the end of that time period. Some Christian leaders believe that after the seventh seal is opened, and whatever's going to happen is going to happen in that time period, then the rapture will occur, of which triggers a seven years of tribulation and then the beginning of the millennial reign. Now none of what changes, considering even if the planet is a billion years old, we're still in the end of the end times. The end is very near, and the signs are speaking out loud. The millennial kingdom, the second coming, a future one thousand year physical reign of Christ on the earth. This will be a unique period of time in that the saints that were raptured will be returning with Jesus to rule and reign with him. This dispensation is also unique in that Satan will be bound during this time frame. Something else that is unique to this time is as follows Sin will be much less active during the millennial reign because Satan is bound and Jesus rules directly with perfect justice. Why sin decreases? Satan is gone. The primary tempter of humanity is locked away so he cannot deceive the nations anymore. Revelations twenty two through three. Jesus rules directly. Christ rules the earth from Jerusalem with complete authority and truth. Justice is immediate. Wrongdoing is checked right away, leading to a time of profound peace and righteousness on earth. Why sin still exists? Human nature, people born during the millennial time in mortal bodies still have free will and a human capacity to turn away from God. Hidden rebellion, outward sin is restrained by Christ's iron rule, but some people may still harbor rebellious hearts. The final test at the very end of the thousand years, Satan is released for a short time, and a large number of people still choose to rebel, proving that sin was only suppressed, not completely erased from human hearts until the final judgment, Revelation twenty, seven through ten. And also unique to this time will be that people will once again live for a very extended length of time. Isaiah sixty five twenty. No more shall an infant from there live but a few days, nor an old man who has not fulfilled his days, for the child shall die one hundred years old, but the sinner being one hundred years old shall be accursed. Okay, so let's look at the pattern of failure and judgment for each dispensational period. Each dispensation follows a distinct cycle. God gives a command, humanity fails to keep it, and God delivers a judgment. The seven cycles of failure and judgment innocence, failure, Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden, judgment, expulsion from the garden, physical and spiritual death, and accursed earth. Conscience, failure, humanity turned to widespread wickedness, violence, and corruption, judgment, a catastrophic worldwide flood that destroyed all breathing life except Noah's family. And I've taught on this before, but it wasn't just that sin was abounding on earth which caused God to flood it. It was that we had giants, and they introduced heavenly knowledge corrupted, and humanity was not supposed to have that knowledge. That came down from the sons of God. So all of this stuff that was happening, the corruption of all flesh, was in part due to the giants that lived on earth. Human government, failure, humanity refused to scatter across the earth and built the Tower of Babel to make a name for themselves. This was led by Nimrod, who was also considered a giant at the time. Judgment, God confused their language and forcefully scattered them across the globe. Promise, failure, Abraham's descendants doubted God's provision, left the promised land during a famine, and ended up enslaved in Egypt. Judgment, four hundred years of bondage and slavery under Pharaoh. And the Bible actually says that it's a little higher than four hundred years. Law, failure, Israel repeatedly broke the commandments, chased after foreign gods, and ultimately rejected and crucified Jesus Christ. Judgment, the destruction of Jerusalem, a scattering of the Jewish nation, and the temporary hardening of Israel. That nation was scattered for nineteen hundred years until nineteen forty eight. Grace, the church age, failure, the world rejects Christ, and the visible church falls into apostasy and lukewarmness. Judgment, the rapture removes believers, and the global great tribulation falls upon the earth. Now I've taught about this before, but we're currently in the seven seals. We're on the second seal which has already been opened. Each seal has a lifespan of about three and a half years. Then we move into the trumpets. This is when God's wrath begins on the earth, the seven years of tribulation. The kingdom, or millennium, failure, Satan is released after a thousand years, and a massive group of natural born humans join him in a final rebellion. Judgment. Fire consumes the rebels, Satan is cast into the lake of fire, and a final great white throne judgment takes place. And we've talked about that before as well. That's when you have people who believe that they can get into heaven based on their works. So there will be a separation known as the sheeps from the goats. This is not a judgment for those who live their lives as Christians. God remembers their sin no more. So how does salvation work for these different time frames within the Bible? And you want to know this because it is different, depending on when you lived on the planet. No, this doesn't change how we receive salvation as it is the same for every one of us. The entire Bible talks about Jesus from Genesis to Revelation. Listen to this process, including the scriptures before we list what salvation looked like in each era. Salvation in the Bible is described as a free gift from God received through faith in Jesus Christ, with key passages found in John three hundred sixteen, Ephesians two, eight through nine, and Romans ten nine through ten. I was thinking about this this morning, which is that you can't even buy salvation for a dollar, nor for a trillion dollars, but that it's free, and the only way to receive it is to receive it free and in faith, and it will be a miserable revelation for those who end up in hell, who chose to go there based on their free will, that they passed up something so valuable, and yet it was free. Our desperate need for salvation Romans three twenty three. All people have sinned and fall short of God's perfection. Romans six twenty three. The penalty or wage of sin is death, which is separation from God, but God's gift is eternal life, meaning eternal life with God. God's gift in grace John three sixteen, God gave his Son, so whoever believes in him has eternal life. Ephesians two eight through nine. Salvation is by grace through faith. It cannot be purchased, not by your money or your deeds. How to receive salvation Romans ten nine through ten. Confess Jesus as Lord and believe God raised him from the dead to be saved. Now remember this is only part of the picture. Once you get saved, you come into your spiritual calling and purpose, of which you are compelled to live out through the rest of your life on earth, because the more you read the Bible, the more you find out just how much God loves you. Acts sixteen thirty one. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ to be saved, and to believe is to do. Acts fourteen twelve. Salvation is found in no other name, no other God, no other religion, just simple, authentically born again Christians. They might attend churches with different names, but God is not looking at the church name. He's not looking at the denomination or non denomination or the Catholic Church. He's just looking at you as an individual. In many of my messages I use scripture summaries to save some time. This is why I recommend that you look them up. Okay, so the age and dispensation time frames are as follows. In dispensation theology, the basis of salvation is always the same, but the content of faith changes based on what God has revealed up to that point. The core principles of salvation, the basis, always the blood of Jesus Christ. No one is saved by animal sacrifices or good works. The means always by grace through faith. Humans must believe God's word. The difference, the specific instructions people were told to believe varied by era, how salvation looked in each era, innocence and conscience. What they knew, very little formal revelation, the requirement, believing God's direct words and the promise of a future Savior who would crush the serpent Genesis three fifteen. The expression, bringing proper animal sacrifices like Abel did, as an act of faith, showing an understanding that sin required a substitute to human government and promise. What they knew, God made specific covenants with Noah and Abraham, the requirement, believing God's specific personal promises. Example, Abraham simply believed God's promise that he would have a son and countless descendants. God counted his faith as righteousness. Genesis fifteen six. The law, what they knew. God gave six hundred and thirteen commandments through Moses alongside a complex tabernacle slash temple system, the requirement, faith in God, expressed through obedience to the Mosaic covenant. The misconception, the law did not save them, instead, keeping the law and offering animal sacrifices proved their internal faith and heart of repentance towards God. Grace, the church age, what they knew, the full story of Jesus' life, death, burial, and resurrection, the requirement, explicit faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross. The distinction believers today have a complete revelation. We look backwards at the cross that has happened, whereas Old Testament believers looked forward to a redemption that would happen. The millennial kingdom, what they knew, Christ is physically reigning on earth from Jerusalem. The supernatural is visible. The requirement, personal faith in the visible reigning king. The distinction, because Christ is physically present, faith is less about believing in the unseen and more about personal loyalty, obedience, and submission to his direct rule. An example is that today nobody sees Jesus Christ, because he's seated at the right hand of the Father, but in the millennial they'll actually see him physically, so it won't take faith to believe in Jesus Christ because you'll be looking right at him. Lastly, I will go back to the seven year earth age and show you another angle, which by the way doesn't disprove the dispensational record, but simply comes at it from an age standpoint. Now it's going to get a bit academic, but AI doesn't provide a deep and muscular definition of these ages. The first two thousand years is considered the age of chaos. The Bible does not explicitly use the phrase age of chaos as an official historic or prophetic era, but Bible scholars and theologians define this concept using the premortal, unformed state of the universe described in Genesis one two. The premordal state, formless and void, Genesis one two describes the early earth as without form and void, or empty and unshaped. Darkness in the deep, darkness covered the surface of the watery abyss. Precreation condition. This represents the raw, unstructured potential before God spoke creation into an orderly system. Theological interpretations of chaos. The war on disorder. Unlike surrounding ancient Near Eastern mythologies, when creation comes from a violent battle against a chaos monster, the biblical God commands order effortlessly out of the void. Now for the fun stuff. Some believe that Satan was on the earth before God created a garden and humanity. This would then make the earth older and also explain something about how we enter. ended up with dinosaurs that didn't just eat up all of humanity for a small snack. I have previously done messages on this, so I wish you a happy hunting in my library. The return of chaos through sin. In dispensational or systemic theology, whenever humanity rebels or falls into deep sin, such as during the Genesis flood, the protective boundaries of God's order recede, allowing primeval chaos to temporarily reinvade the world. Eschatology Resolution, the overarching biblical narrative portrays history as a movement from primeval chaos to structured order, culminating in Revelation 21, one through four, where chaos, mourning, and the sea of disorder are permanently eradicated. The second two thousand years is considered the age of the Torah. Scholars and traditions define the age of the Torah, the first five books of the Bible using two primary methods traditional chronology and modern academic analysis. Traditional and theological view, divine revelation, traditional belief places a composition at approximately thirty three hundred to thirty five hundred years ago. Mosaic authorship. Followers hold that Moses wrote the text under divine guidance during Exodus from Egypt around the 15th century BCE. Internal genealogies chronologies calculate dates based on the lifespans and generations recorded from biblical figures like Adam and Moses. The third two thousand years is considered the age of Messianic. I included some differing views so that you understand what I or someone else says doesn't come without some objection. Don't just believe something because someone said it. Not even me or a prophet, apostle, evangelist, your pastor or your best friend. Reading your Bible is the best antidote to seeing biblically supportive positions while avoiding devil induced deceptions. John eight forty four The Messianic age is the biblical era when God's chosen king, the Messiah, rules the earth to bring universal peace, justice, and the renewal of all creation. Old Testament expectations, future hope early biblical writers look forward to a time when God would step into human history. No more war. Prophets like Isaiah and Micah wrote that people would turn weapons into farming tools and stop fighting. Healing of nature wild animals and humans will live in complete safety and harmony knowledge of God. Everyone on earth will know and understand God. Christian perspective New Testament two parts the dictionary of Bible themes explains that the age started when Jesus first came to earth Kingdom of God. Jesus showed signs of this age through healing sick people and preaching and teaching final end. Believers look forward to Jesus returning to finish this age with total peace. And the last thousand years is a millennial age. Of course there are transition events but they will fit in one of the ages mentioned so that the seven thousand year period works. The millennial age in the Bible is defined as a thousand year reign of Jesus Christ on earth, of course, with his saints right the raptured saints characterized by peace, righteousness and the binding of Satan and as I said before people live longer and animals get along and the baby will play with the cobra and the lion etc Definition and scriptural basis the term the word millennium comes from the Latin roots meaning a thousand years, melee meaning thousand and anus meaning year. The text the concept is explicitly mentioned multiple times in Revelation twenty two through seven which describes an era where Christ and his saints rule the earth Old Testament prophecies many prophets describe this era as a physical restoration of the world featuring global peace, the end of war, and nature living in harmony. Major interpretations Bible scholars interpret the nature and timing of this one thousand year period in three primary ways Premillennialism believes Christ will return physically to earth before a literal one thousand year reign begins following a period of great tribulation. I personally cannot find a scripture that supports this position but I know he is coming to rapture as saints but he will not be on earth. It says that he will be in the sky and that we will go to him. Postmillennialism believes the world will gradually be Christianized and Christ will return long after the golden age of peace and righteousness which may be symbolic or literal in duration. I also cannot find any support for this position. I know there's a scripture that says God desires all men to be saved. We also know that people have free will and will not choose God. In fact Luke says there are many who are trying to get in but will not be able. Amillennialism interprets the one thousand years symbolically as the current spiritual reign of Christ and the church between his first and second comings, rather than a future literal era. Also there's no support. It seems to me that if we let the Bible speak to us we will stay out of interpretation trouble. As I've said before you can believe and will believe based on your level of knowledge whatever it is that you want to believe. It's a matter of choice and the thing that is to affect our choices is the depth at which we seek God in his word. And as we get close to wrapping this up the definition of the number seven and you'll see how it pertains to the seven thousand years. Spiritually the number seven revents divine completeness, inner wisdom and the fulfillment of a sacred cycle biblical and sacred meanings, divine perfection. Scripture used the seven to show completeness and holiness. Creation and rest God made the world in six days and rested on the seventh day. Sacred rhythms it set the pattern for the seven day week and holy years. Second Peter 3 8 But beloved do not forget this one thing that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years and a thousand years as one day. If you want to read the seven day creation story you can find it in Genesis chapter one through Genesis 2 verse 3. But if you want a quick shot we can find it in the following scriptures Exodus 20 verse 1 for in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the seas and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it. This is a controversial position in which it is supposed that Peter was solving the problem of the earth age in his day. Yes some think so and but you had better believe that it is still a controversial position. You can decide and move on. It really has nothing to do with salvation. Let's close in prayer. May the Lord make you increase and abound in love to one another and to all so that he may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before your God and Father at the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints. Now may the God of peace the one in whom we call wonderful counselor mighty God everlasting Father the Prince of peace may he himself sanctify you completely and may your whole spirit soul and body be preserved blameless at the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. To our Lord of Lords and our King of kings, to our high and lifted up great high priest, who has once and for all paid the price, that you might see and hear God, may he hear and respond to our prayers. To our God we stand and pray as he too always lives to make intercession for you while seated at the right hand of the Father. May the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, the great shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the everlasting covenant make you complete in every good work to do his will, working in you what is well pleasing in his sight through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Now to him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.
